How You Can Prevent Rabies
There is no treatment for rabies in wild or domestic animals — and virtually 100% of all disease leads to death once clinical signs begin.¹
But, by working with your veterinarian, you can help set up a successful rabies prevention program. Here are a few tips to help you prevent rabies:
- Make sure your pet is vaccinated — and keep rabies vaccinations up to date.
- Keep your pet’s environment free of wild animals.
- Clean up pet food or garbage that can attract wild animals.
- Wildlife-proof your home by trimming overhanging branches, capping chimneys and plugging holes that animals can enter.
- Do not approach an animal that is acting strangely — no matter how cuddly it seems.
- Inspect your pet regularly for signs of fresh bites or scratches.
- If you suspect that you or your pet has been bitten by a rabid animal, consult your veterinarian and report the bite to local animal control authorities.
- Report any stray animals.
